What is Lightroom metadata?

Lightroom stores descriptive, administrative, and technical data (EXIF, IPTC, XMP). Some fields are embedded inside files (JPEG, DNG), others live alongside RAWs as .xmp sidecars. The catalog keeps its own copy for speed and sync.

Classic vs Cloud
Lightroom Classic (desktop, catalog-based) gives full control of sidecars. Lightroom (cloud) syncs metadata across devices; export options still control what leaves the ecosystem.

Where metadata lives

Catalog (lrcat)

Fast, central store

Ratings, flags, keywords, edits, and IPTC/XMP fields are cached in the catalog for speed and search. You can write them back to files/sidecars at any time.

Keywords & people (hierarchies)

Hierarchical keywords

Controlled vocabulary

Organize keywords as Event > Conference > 2025. Toggle “Include on Export” for sensitive tags you never want public.

People view

Face recognition

Confirm matches and control visibility. Use “Remove Person Info” at export to avoid embedding identities into public files.
Exporting headshots or behind-the-scenes images? Scrub hidden EXIF before publishing with a privacy-first, browser-only cleaner MetaRemover.com. Processes locally, no uploads.

Location: maps, GPS, and privacy

GPS can be helpful for archives, but it’s often sensitive. Use Map module to add or remove coordinates. On export, tick “Remove Location Info” to strip geodata.

Safety
Avoid publishing home/work coordinates, schools, or minors’ events. Keep a private master with full metadata and export redacted copies.

# Make a redacted copy folder (keeps originals untouched)
mkdir -p redacted && rsync -a export/ redacted/

# Drop GPS, face regions, and camera serials
exiftool -r -overwrite_original -ignoreMinorErrors \
  -GPS*= -XMP:RegionName= -XMP:RegionInfo= \
  -SerialNumber= -InternalSerialNumber= \
  -OwnerName= -Artist= \
  redacted/

# Verify only safe IPTC remains
exiftool -r -G -a -s redacted/ | grep -E "IPTC|XMP-dc|XMP-rights|XMP-photoshop"
Tip
Keep a master archive with full metadata for rights management, and publish redacted derivatives.
