What is Lightroom metadata?

Lightroom stores descriptive, administrative, and technical data (EXIF, IPTC, XMP). Some fields are embedded inside files (JPEG, DNG), others live alongside RAWs as .xmp sidecars. The catalog keeps its own copy for speed and sync.

Classic vs Cloud

Lightroom Classic (desktop, catalog-based) gives full control of sidecars. Lightroom (cloud) syncs metadata across devices; export options still control what leaves the ecosystem.

Organize keywords as Event > Conference > 2025. Toggle “Include on Export” for sensitive tags you never want public.

Confirm matches and control visibility. Use “Remove Person Info” at export to avoid embedding identities into public files.

Location: maps, GPS, and privacy

GPS can be helpful for archives, but it’s often sensitive. Use Map module to add or remove coordinates. On export, tick “Remove Location Info” to strip geodata.

Avoid publishing home/work coordinates, schools, or minors’ events. Keep a private master with full metadata and export redacted copies.
